Stories in music (with music videos!!) week 2
I wanted to provide you all with some music videos, several of which contain inspirational stories. These are some of my favorites and I hope you enjoy!!
1. James Blunt - Carry you home
http://www.vh1.com/video/play.jhtml?id=1583757&vid=212958
This is a very soothing song and beautiful music video. While this song can take on several different interpretations, It tells the story of a guy who dies in war and leaves his wife behind. James Blunt plays the role of the messenger to the widow who brings her the message of her husband's death along with his locket and picture of her and a letter from him to her.
The concept of carrying you home and "as strong as you are, tender you go" is relating that God can take any of us at any time and we must trust in him in everything we do. When you watch this video in the link above, the imagery of the sky over the ocean with the bright sunlight shining through the clouds symbolizes God's power. I hope this video inspires you, like I was.
2. Dashboard Confessional - stolen
http://www.vh1.com/video/play.jhtml?id=1552227&vid=123230
This song is one of my all time favorites and this video is the ultimate compliment.
The setting on the beach with the rocks and the waves are breathtaking. This video tells the story of two childhood friends who are separated throughout life and always find their ways back to one another. They posess cards which foreshadown their future meetings.....
Stolen to me conveys the idea of first love, and how the first time someone truly falls in love, a piece of their heart is usually always stolen away by their first love. They will never be forgotten...."You are the best one, of the best ones, we all look like we feel"
3. Coldplay - The scientist
http://www.vh1.com/video/play.jhtml?id=1572206&vid=21347
This classic song tells of the science of the chase and first meeting....
It adresses "nobody said it was easy" talking about the science that guys need to master of meeting the perfect girl. The music video is played entirely in reverse which I am interpreting as him looking back on his life and his mind and searching for meaning and love.
"Im sorry, you dont know how lovely you are" is one of the best lines in any song I know.
4. Colbie Caillat - Realize
http://www.vh1.com/video/play.jhtml?artist=2575099&vid=203269
"Take time to realize, That your warmth is crashing down on in
Take time to realize that I am on your side, Didn't I, didn't I tell you"
Inspirational song about finding one's soulmate. This is a very simple music video showing her and a guy struggling in their relationship to compromise and find truth.
5. The Fray -Over my head
http://www.vh1.com/video/play.jhtml?vid=60180&artist=1946832
I never knew, I never knew that everything was falling through
That everyone I knew was waiting on a queueTo turn and run
when all I needed was the truth
This song is another one of my all time favorites, and I interpret the video to mean that when people fall in love, in a way they gain the innocence of a child. This song is very accurate from a guy's perspective and the image of " 8 seconds left in overtime" conveys that even in the most unlikely times, the girl is on his mind...
A couple new and random songs:
1. Mark Owen - Alone without you
2. Good luck joes - middle of me
3. Jeremy Lister - Fit
4. Leeland - Opposite way
5. Ryan cabrera - say
Other genres: Country and R&B (for Boris M. and Caleb R) =)
6. Kenny Chesney - the Good stuff http://www.vh1.com/video/play.jhtml?artist=504765&vid=59278
7. Phil Vassar - Love is a beautiful thing http://www.vh1.com/video/play.jhtmlartist=860690&vid=209831
8. Phil Vassar - Another day in Paradise http://www.vh1.com/video/play.jhtml?artist=860690&vid=55417
9. Brian Mcknight - Back at 1 http://www.vh1.com/video/play.jhtml?artist=12238&vid=18135
10. Mario - how do I breathe http://www.vh1.com/video/play.jhtml?artist=11918&vid=151861

Playlist 1 - Fate will decide
The theme of this first week is fate. I hope that you see the connection I will make in these songs. Whatever one calls it....whether it be fate, or trust, or faith in God's provision, for the sake of these songs and my explanation of them, it does NOT matter!! The point is that God opens doors in our lives and allows people to come together for friendships, learning and most importantly love. Regarding love, the right person or "the one" is out there for all of us and this music helps us never forget that. Purity, integrity, trustworthiness, and perseverance are all qualities that help strengthen our character(s) and catalyze the right thing happenening and God's will being done in our lives.
1. Anberlin - inevitable(not on their myspace, go to their website)
http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=3844590
Do you remember when we were just kids, and cardboard boxes took us miles from what we would miss?School yard conversations taken to heart, and laughter took the place of everything we knew we were not.I want to break every clock.the hands of time could never move again. We could stay in this moment for the rest of our lives. Is it over now hey, hey is it over now?I want to be your last first kiss, that you'll ever have.I want to be your last first kiss.Amazing how life turns out, the way that it does.We end up hurting the worst, the only ones we really love.
Anberlin is an amazing Christian rock band out of Orlando. This song is a very relaxing and beautiful song about love memory, time and love. "I want to be your last first kiss" is an amzing expression of devotion and sincere love. It is not some shallow fling or a "fun" experience, it is pure and true love.
2. Emerson Hart - I wish the best for you
http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=3239653
how long can we wait here to say goodbye? the words once they're spoken, are words that we cant take back to where we were before things got in the way life gets so confusing when you know what youre losing * you, me, why can't we see that there's more to love than we'll ever know? sometimes you're closer when you're letting go i wish the best for you i wish the best for you.
This song was one of my favorite songs as I walked around New York on the peaceful NY summer nights. It is a song about care and respect for one that you love. Sometimes as he says in the song "why can't we see that there's more to love than we'll ever know," true love is much deeper and more important than what one wants or desires at any time, it has to be meant to be.
While this song seems sad and he wrote it for friends of his who were getting divorced, I think there is a crucial lesson to be learned here about sacrifice.
3. Blake Shelton - Austin Blakeshelton.com
The telephone fell to the counterShe heard but she couldn't believeWhat kind of man would hang on that longWhat kind of love that must beShe waited three days, and then she tried againShe didn't know what she'd say,But she heard three rings and thenIf it's Friday night I'm at the ballgameAnd first thing Saturday, if it don't rainI'm headed out to the lakeAnd I'll be gone, all weekend longBut I'll call you back when I get homeOn Sunday afternoonAnd P.S. If this is Austin, I still love youWell, this time she left her numberBut not another wordThen she waited by the phone on Sunday evenin'And this is what he heardIf you're callin' 'bout my heartIt's still yoursI should've listened to it a little moreThen it wouldn't have taken me so long to know where I belongAnd by the way, boy, this is no machine you're talkin' toCan't you tell, this is Austin, and I still love you
Im gonna go ahead and dedicate this song for Boris Michev, who loves it as well hahaha.
This song is an epic story about a guy and a girl who are separated by time and circumstance but they are clearly still in love. This song is the epidemy of committment, and devotion and the message it has sends a chill up my spine about every time I listen to it. One of my all time favorites......
4. Matt Wertz - 5:19 http://www.myspace.com/mattwertz
With one eye on the clockAnd one on the phoneIt's 5:19...I'm feeling aloneAnd if I could talk to youI'd want you to knowI'm holding loose, But ain't letting go. Baby, take all the time you need I just want you to knowI'll be here, waiting
Matt wertz is an amazing artist who I have seen several times live. He is coming out with a new cd this summer for which I am very excited. This song is about patience and waiting for the right timing in relationships. The clock and phone imagery make this song alive and so meaningful.
5. Dan Wilson - All kinds http://www.myspace.com/danwilsonmusic
One life is all we ever getAnd all we ever give up for it in returnIs all of the ones we might have beenJust one kind of beautiful each in our turnInnocence and consequenceI only hope we never learnRunning all around all aroundAll kinds of beautifulRunning all around all aroundAll kinds of beautifulHey now, every little thing you gave to meMade the time pass faster than my eyes could even seeYou are true improbabilityYou're the proof of when they sayYou never know what's gonna be
Dan wilson, the ex semisonic lead singer has an amazing album called free life which contains this song. I have had girls tell me "I wish a guy would sing this song to me" :) This song shows how girls want to be loved and appreciated for all kinds of beauty and how when truly in love, a guy can recognize all kinds. " One life is all we ever get" so make sure you find "the one" !!!!!!!
Other songs for the week:
6. Monk and Neagle - 21st time (thanks Emily B.)
7. The perishers - trouble sleeping : amazing song about struggles in life
I felt inspired tonight to talk about love and fate and im sorry if my commentary sucked!!!
Im kinda just experimenting with this so I hope you give me feedback and ideas about what Im trying to do here. All this music is either available on myspace.com or itunes. I hope you Enjoy!
Until next week...

Special Preview
1. Phil Wickham - Divine Romance
http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=7576837
The fullness of Your grace is here with me/ The richness of Your beauty’s all I see/ The brightness of Your glory has arrived/ In Your presence God, I’m completely satisfied/
For You I sing I dance Rejoice in this divine romance/ Lift my heart and my hands
To show my love, to show my love/
A deep deep flood, an Ocean flows from/ You Of deep deep love, yeah it’s filling up the room/ Your innocent blood, has washed my guilty life In Your presence God I’m completely satisfied/
I recently acquired this song from Katherine Rutledge on a mixed cd that she had in her car. This song is an incredibly uplifting ballad about God's constant presence and personal love for all of us. Whenever I am feeling in doubt or let down, this song encourages me to just keep trusting and relying on God to take care of my needs and wants in this world. I have been walking to class, listening to this song on my ipod before and after class and it really helps me go about my day. I think as holy week is approaching, this is a great song to listen to and remind us of Jesus's passion (2nd verse). More from Phil Wickham to come.
2. Leona Lewis - Bleeding Love Myspace.com/leonalewis
Closed off from love I didn't need the pain Once or twice was enough And it was all in vain Time starts to pass Before you know it you're frozen But something happened For the very first time with you My heart melts into the ground Found something true And everyone's looking round Thinking I'm going crazy But I don't care what they say I'm in love with you They try to pull me away But they don't know the truth My heart's crippled by the vein That I keep on closing You cut me open and I Keep bleeding Keep, keep bleeding love I keep bleeding I keep, keep bleeding love Keep bleeding Keep, keep bleeding love You cut me open Trying hard not to hear But they talk so loud Their piercing sounds fill my ears Try to fill me with doubt Yet I know that the goal Is to keep me from falling But nothing's greater Than the rush that comes with your embrace And in this world of loneliness I see your face Yet everyone around me Thinks that I'm going crazy, maybe, maybe
Leona Lewis is a rising pop/R&B singer out of London, I just recently discovered her music and to be honest am only really crazy about this song so far.... This song is an incredibly empowering song about love and following your heart. She is talking about other people in her life being discouraging and trying to pull her away from how her heart feels but she has to remain true. While I cannot personally relate to this song at this time being that I am not in love and havent been for several years lol, I really appreciate the raw emotion that she clearly expresses in this song. I went to downtown Greenville a couple nights ago at about 1 am and ran around this park called Falls Park which has a waterfall and I was just jamming out to this song and others and just felt, in a nutshell.......ALIVE
3. Simple plan - I can Wait Foreverhttp://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=29386008
You look so beautiful todayWhen you're sitting there it's hard for me to look awaySo i try to find the words that i could sayI know distance doesn't matter but you feel so far awayAnd I cant lieEvery time I leave my heart turns grayAnd I want to come back home to see your faceAnd ICause I just cant take itAnother day without you with meIs like a blade that cuts right through me But I can wait, I can wait forever, When you call my heart stops beatingWhen you're gone it wont stop bleeding, But I can wait, I can wait forever
Now you are probably thinking, Simple plan, they are a little high school emo band....I beg to differ. Simple plan has drastically matured with the release of their latest album in 2008 and this song is evidence. This song is about waiting for "the one" for as long as it takes. The themes of this song include loyalty, respect and lasting love and who is either in love or has been in love, cannot relate to this feeling???
I hope this first post has given u a taste of what I hope to expose in this blog. I have provided one Christian, 1 pop/R&B, and 1 alternative rock song for you to enjoy and check out.Until next time...
